The basic characteristics of a Split Definition

People who are of Split Definition in Human Design have a split in their design. This means that there are two sets of defined centers in the bodychart that are not connected by a defined channel. Because of this missing channel, the bridging channel, they are missing a consistent flow of energy between these parts. They actually feel that they are not a whole and think that this should be fixed in some way or the other.

One can have a simple split or a wide(r) split, depending on how much channels are needed to bridge the gap. Other definitions in Human Design are Single Definitions, Triple Split or Quadruple Split.

The Split Definition and the Not Self

When a person with a split definition is in their Not Self behavior, he or she is very much focused on the channel or channels that will bridge their split. Sometimes this can be just a single gate, i.e. when a gate at one end of the bridging channel is active.

In their Not Self, the pressure of this gate is enormous. The Not Self always wants to be what it is not. So bridging the split can become the main focus of the Not Self behavior.

In general, for them the conditioning of the this bridging channel will be more dominant than that of the open or undefined centers. They will use this bridge (where they go to school, so to speak) to learn about what their conditioning is.

When they are behaving correctly, they will not be focusing on this Not Self part. Then they will just be living their lives in this (single) split system of energy that goes through their body.

Split Definitions and relationships

Split Definitions are looking for other auras to bridge their channels. That’s because there are channels that need to be bridged to become ‘whole’. They may feel more complete with a partner.

This means that they can build healthy relations with others in relationships. Especially when they are living their True Self. Of course, if they are living in their conditioning, this may be different.

In romantic relationships, Split Definitions may choose to live together with their partners. For a Split Definition this comes more natural than for a Single Definition, because they are looking for others to bridge their energy. Of course they should always follow their strategy and authority. Taking time apart is always good for any human being.

Which undefined channel influences you the most?

As a Split Definition you should have a look at your bridging channel(s) and determine which one influences you the most. If there’s only one gate that needs to become active, that gate will be under a lot of pressure. It will have a big influence on your conditioning. For the specific channel(s) and/or the specific gate(s), they will influence you as a person when you’re in your Not Self behavior.

You can take this into account. If you look at how you lead your life, then you can see that you will be focusing on certain parts more than others. And certain parts of your conditioning will be stronger than other parts of your conditioning.

That’s why as a Split Definition it’s important to know what your definition is. To know which gates and channels will influence you the most and may pull you into your Not Self.

Example Split Definition bodygraph: Andy Warhol

Below is the bodygraph of Andy Warhol. A lot of pressure on the gates 15, 14 and 46 to bridge the split between Sacral and G Center.
